There is a large range of bedding materials, from the popular straw and shavings through to recycled by-products from other industries.

Deciding on a bedding can be a headache and things get more complicated if your horse has allergies. Things to consider before purchasing bedding:

  • Health Concerns - if your horse allergic to dust then his performance can be affected if you choose the wrong bedding

  • Econonic – do you have a tight budget?

  • Labour – some materials can be heavy to move once soiled

  • Availability – Is your choice of bed readily available locally – all year?

  • Your preference – You will be the one mucking out each day – which material do you prefer working with?

  • Picking a bedding like paper or cardboard could pay dividends when there is a shortage of harvestable crops

Some things to remember:

·       How absorbent is it?

·       The levels of dust is created

·       The amount of cushioning and support

·       Labour involved with lifting and forking

·       Can it be used as a deep-litter bedding?

·       Allergic reactions

·       Storage – do you have enough space and can you move it when needed?

·       Will your horse eat the bedding?

·       Will it go mouldy?

·       Disposal – does it decompose quickly on the muckheap and will the contents be collected?
