Order winter supplies of hay, straw, hard feed etc in early autumn to stock up ready for those cold winter days
Need more hands? Put your haynet inside a large trug, then fill haynet with hay To make sure the correct horse eats from his own food bowl tie a piece of coloured string that matches his headcollar - to the handle of the feed bowlOlder horses benefit from softer, leafier hay as it is easier to chew
We all know the importance of feeding the correct quantities and feed to our horses. If you have any doubt, most of the big names in the feed market place, have nutritionists who will be happy to answer your questions relating to their products. FEEDING RULES - Rule one – fresh drinking water must be available at all times both in the stable and in the field
- Adequate fibre is essential for a healthy digestive tract and the psychological health of the hose.
- Feed small concentrate meals. The horse’s stomach is small so feed no more than 500g per 100kg of bodyweight per meal
- Weight tape your horse every two weeks and condition score regularly. Score cards are available from feed companies
- Assess the amount of work you are doing and feed accordingly
- You cannot change your horse’s character by feeding different feeds. You can however minimise excitability or increase energy by altering the horses feed. Feeding an overweight horse cereal to liven him up will only make him fatter and lazier
- Provide a balanced diet as per instructions from your nutritionist, vet or feed merchant, to ensure the correct levels of minerals and vitamins
- If your horse suffers from laminitis, then feed according to your vets instructions
- Remember – feed according to your horse’s temperament, work load, breed, age, condition, type and climate
