BUYING GUIDELINES Only consider horses that suit your abilities
Never buy 'sight unseen'
Take someone with you that has more experience if you are going to an auction
See the horse in the stable, field, being tacked up, groomed, rugged up, loaded in horse box/trailer etc
Ask if he is good to groom, tackup, with vet, farrier, to worn, clip etc Does the horse crib bite, wind suck, weave, box walk
Ask the seller for proof of ownership - eg Passport. Don't be fobbed of by 'it is in the post'. You can be fined for not having a Passport
It is illegal to sell a horse without a Passport. Once you have purchased a horse, you have 30 days to transfer ownership with one of the Passport Issuing Agencies
Have the horse vetted to ensure it is fit for your purpose
Ask if you can have the horse on trial, lease or loan. If the seller is genuine and really wants a good home for their horse - they may agree
Get a recipt - detailing it is fit for your purpose (list it out) and that it doesn't have any vices
Collect the horse yourself and make sure you have insurance before you load him onto transport
Buying from a dealer - you do have the option to return the horse if not fit for purpose. You cannot do this with a private seller
